The opening of a novel will introduce the narrator and the narrative technique. Is the narrator omniscient (all knowing) the same as the author or different? Does the narrator play a role or is he or she merely an observer? Is the novel written in first or third person? Does the narrator directly address the reader?

I am reading The Catcher in the Rye and the narrator is also the main character, Holden. So far the story is a flash back. It is narrated in first person

I am currently reading Friday Night Lights. This book is told in first person point of view. The narrator tells about everyone in the story but he can not get in the charecters' heads and hear their thoughts like an omniciant can. The narrator does not play in this book they are just a observer that knows everything that went and and is going on.The narrator does not directly adress the reader. This is how the narrator is in Friday Night Lights.

I am reading Hoot, this book is written in first person, and the narrator never adresses the reader. The narrator is just a bystander so far in this book, it is almost like a journal of some sort. The narrator is also not like the author.
